Links of London Sale Wallers

The morning she planned to quit -- without telling her coach Links of London Sale true reason -- she found the shoes on her doorstep.Waller and her sons shopped for jeans for the students on Wednesday afternoon at Rugged Wearhouse on Hershberger Road. The three huddled near the entrance, poring over lists of students' sizes and developing a plan to shop for 63 different pairs of jeans. The Wallers quickly spotted a shelf of men's jeans for $9.99 a pair and starting digging through the folded pants for the sizes needed."I am thrilled to find $10 jeans that have some substance," Amy Waller said excitedly. She estimates she can outfit a teenager with clothes, a coat, shoes and school supplies for about $150. But when she can save on the more expensive items, such as jeans and shoes, she likes to stretch the dollars so she can shop for more students. The Wallers filled one shopping cart with men's jeans before moving on to the juniors' section, where jeans were $7.99. The shoppers on a mission found 61 of the 63 pairs of jeans on the list at Links of London Bracelets Wearhouse that day.Collin Waller, 17 and a senior, like many teenage boys, was not particularly excited about shopping for clothes, but Amy Waller said he frequently loads the back of his car with items to tote from place to place for her.Yale Waller, a 15-year-old sophomore, said he doesn't mind the shopping because he knows there are needy students."Some of them are wearing raggedy stuff that has been worn and worn. Their shoes are usually destroyed," he said.Waller, a stay-at-home mom, said her sons have an appreciation and heart for this kind of need because they know what she went through as a teenager. At Patrick Henry, Waller and six other mothers answer requests or referrals throughout the year from school administrators and counselors to provide students with emergency clothing, food and school supplies."I just want them to know -- all kids -- if they have any need, there is someplace to go and get what they need. Links of London Disc Charm cannot expect them to go to school while worrying about what they are going to eat or wear," Waller said. The Wallers' dining room has transformed into a miniwarehouse, with jeans, shampoo bottles, deodorant, packages of socks, tubes of Chapstick and granola bars piled on the table.Other parents and friends have contributed to Waller's cause. She sends e-mails with needs and people just respond, she said. A few corporate donations have been collected, too.Once she saw the level of need at Patrick Henry, she said, she wanted to reach out to the other schools in the city. She said she plans to form a nonprofit organization, which will allow her to expand the services."Districtwide, free and reduced lunch [eligibility] is about 68 percent," Patrick Henry Principal Connie Ratcliffe said. "We are a pretty good microcosm of that."She said more students are requesting early dismissals to leave school to go to work, and some teenagers wear the same shirt day after Links of London Dome Jade Charm because it is all they have. Couch surfing -- moving frequently among friends' houses and sleeping on the sofa or wherever space is available -- is way of life for many pupils."You think 63 [students] in one place, wow, that's a lot," Ratcliffe said. "But it is probably not a third of the ones who really need it.
